See Your Eyes As A Part of Your Regular Health Routine

Protecting your eyes is an important part of your regular health routine. Regular check ups and eye exams are ideal elements to include in your eye health plan, but there are many of factors that should not be forgotten.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) offers a wealth of tips to help you safeguard against eyestrain and irreversible damage to your eyes.

  • Eating a nutritious diet, full of fruits, vegetables and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids can help to promote healthy eyes.
  • Wearing protective eyewear like sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun or safety glasses and goggles to prevent injury from foreign particles, both help to ensure your eyesight isn’t susceptible to permanent damage.
  • Knowing your family’s history of any eye conditions or threatening diseases can help you to learn whether or not you are at high risk for developing related ailments.
  • Remember to rest your eyes to reduce eyestrain, especially if you spend a lot of time on the computer or focusing on any element for an extended amount of time. According to the NEI, consider trying the “20-20-20 rule,” which suggests that, every 20 minutes, you look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds to help reduce eyestrain.
