Dental Hygiene, Insurance Coverage Impacts Overall Health

Adequate dental hygiene and insurance coverage is just as important as all other health concerns. Ignoring dental health problems can have severe repercussions.

According to the National Association of Dental Plans (NADP), Americans with dental insurance benefits are more likely to go to the dentist for preventative and restorative care, and also make it a family affair for all-around improved health.

A report by the NADP states that approximately 205 million Americans or 64 percent of the population had dental benefits at year-end of 2014. These benefits are a combination of private dental plans, individual coverage and coverage through public programs, such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and TriCare.

Still, about 114 million Americans are without dental insurance, and in turn, visit the dentist less. Of those, 67.7 million are under the age of 65, according to the NADP. Without the needed coverage, these individuals lack support for restorative care and treatment of conditions such as gum disease. These individuals are also susceptible to higher occurrences of illnesses such as heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Good dental hygiene and regular exams are critical to healthy living routines for children and adults. Don’t let rising health care costs force you to push preventative care to the back burner. Having coverage can make it easier to reveal concerns before they become serious problems.
