Tips for RVing on the Open Road This Summer

If you’re an avid RVer, you’re likely gearing up for miles and miles of adventurous travel this summer. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), 8.5% of U.S. households now own RVs, which is up from 8.0% in 2005.

The organization’s RV Consumer Demographic Profile shows the number of RV-owning households has increased from 7.9 million in 2005 to a new peak of 8.9 million households. Cherished travel experiences and new budget constraints were noted as influencing consumer opinions about RVs.

And the industry has responded to the increased interest by offering a variety of size options and price points for those interested in making a purchase. The study also showed promising future RV purchase intentions. Seventy percent of current RV owners plan to purchase another RV to replace their current unit in the future. Among new market entrants, defined as households that have never owned an RV in the past, 14% plan a future purchase with more than a third intending to purchase a new RV.

Whether you’re a current RV owner or you’re looking to buy, having the right insurance coverage is important to protect your vehicle and your personal belongings. RVBasics.com  offers the following things to consider when buying coverage for your RV.

Collision & Liability

Make sure you know the type of collision coverage you’re being offered. For example, does the policy cover the entire motorhome, the fifth wheel or the travel trailer if damaged beyond repair? If so, will you receive full replacement costs? Purchasing total coverage may save you in the long run.

Special Full-Time Coverage

If you utilize your RV on a full-time basis, know that many RV policies are not written to cover it. However, there is coverage available. Make sure you have a policy that protects your belongings. If it includes personal property coverage, make sure it’s enough to cover your all of your belongings in the event of a major accident.

Eligibility for Discounts

Be sure to ask your agent about available discounts. Good driving, non-smokers, anti-theft devices and other things may offer you savings on your policy. It’s always good to ask.

Once you’ve got your RV and the right protection, it’s time to hit the road. Planning, proper maintenance and smart driving tactics are key to keeping you and your family safe while headed while on your journey. Here are some tips to help keep you safe on the open road.

Before You Go

Plan ahead. Map your route and if you’re relying on GPS, keep a map on hand as a backup. Also, check the weather along your route and know places where you can park in case of strong winds or inclement weather. Having an emergency plan may also be helpful. Be mindful of any roadwork happening along the way and plan accordingly.

Vehicle checklist. Create a vehicle checklist to review before you and your family hit the road. This may include everything from tire pressure to lights to flushing lines and hitch safety.

On the Road

Safe driving. Be alert when on the road and avoid talking or texting on your cell phone while driving. Leave adequate space between you and the cars around you. If you have to break quickly, you will need adequate room and time to stop your RV.

At Your Destination

Ideal parking. Be sure to park you RV safely in designated areas. If you will be grilling, make sure you do so at a safe distance away from your vehicle and away from any surrounding brush. Also be prepared for any accidental fires or flare ups.
