Starting today, North Carolina law requires moped drivers statewide to have liability insurance.

This latest changes comes a year after owners were required to register their mopeds via the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). North Carolina’s House Bill 148 requires moped drivers have minimum liability coverage under state law. That equals to $30,000 for injury or death of one person, $60,000 for injury or death of two or more people and $25,000 for property damage. Moped owners who fail to maintain liability insurance coverage may have their license plate revoked.

All North Carolina moped owners must provide the DMV with proof of liability insurance coverage from their provider or they must take a certificate of liability insurance form, available from their insurance carrier, to their local North Carolina license plate agency. Owners can also provide the insurance company’s name and policy number to their local plate agency. The DMV will issue updated registration cards once the appropriate information is provided.

According to DMV.org, here are some things that may be offered as a part of your moped insurance coverage:

  • Liability for bodily injury. This will financially protect you should you hit a pedestrian or a bicyclist.
  • Liability for property damage. Though mopeds aren’t known for inflicting heavy damage upon cars or fences, it’s always wise to carry this kind of insurance.
  • Collision coverage. This will pay for damages to your moped, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive is an important coverage to carry when riding in a city. This will protect you against theft and vandalism.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured coverage. If you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver, your medical and damage expenses will be covered. Not all states offer this option to moped riders.
  • Medical Payments (MedPay). This will cover medical costs regardless of fault.
