Get a Second Chance After a DWI or DUI Conviction

Everyone makes mistake at some point or another. For some, those mistakes happen behind the wheel. If you have committed a major traffic violation, such as driving while impaired (DWI), you know that it can greatly impact your life, the life of others, your driving privileges and your wallet.

According to DMV.org, a driver’s impairment is most commonly determined by their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the state of North Carolina. Drivers age 21 and older are considered impaired with a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher, and drivers under age 21 are considered impaired with any alcohol concentration. Commercial drivers, those with a CDL, are considered impaired with w BAC of 0.04 percent or higher.

Drivers with previous DWI convictions are considered impaired with a BAC of 0.04 percent or higher. However, this may vary depending on a person’s driving record or date of conviction.

Also a part of DWI laws in North Carolina, drivers cannot have open alcohol containers in their vehicle or help anyone under the age of 21 obtain alcohol.

In addition, drivers with a DWI conviction in North Carolina are required to attend alcohol safety school and/or substance abuse treatment, along with additional fines and, in some cases, a jail sentence.

A Rise in Rates

Insurance companies evaluate this information when you apply for or renew your auto coverage. A DWI conviction may cause you to be considered a high-risk driver and added points may result in higher premiums for several years. Furthermore, some insurance companies may not extend coverage if you have a DWI conviction on your record.
