Find a Reputable Dealer
Often times, dealers will offer some form of warranty, which you won’t get with a private seller. Dealers can also provide you with details of the motorcycles prior owners. If you don’t have that option, ask the seller if you can have the bike inspected prior to purchasing it.
Examine the Motorcycle More Than Once
- Before: Assess the condition of the motorcycle while it has been sitting and cold. Doing so may prevent you missing any potential problems on start-up of the bike. Such things as tires, the frame and battery can alert you to any existing issues.
- During: Take the motorcycle for a test drive to assess any issues while the bike is running. Any refusal by the seller to let you drive the bike should be a red flag. While driving, pay attention to how the bike sounds, gauges and other critical parts.
- After: Don’t forget to do a post-ride check of the motorcycle. Does the bike easily crank again? Are there any leaks? It’s better to be extra cautious before you put up your hard-earned cash.
Ask for Service History
The service history of any vehicle is a great indicator of how well or poorly it has been cared for. Asking the seller for a service history of the motorcycle can alert you to problems and help you determine if the sale is right for you. Also ask for the owner’s manual.
